Sharp Photo Checklist

Everything a beginner needs to capture crisp, clear images!

Before You Shoot & In the Field

Before You Shoot

  • ☐ Charge your battery fully
  • ☐ Format your memory card
  • ☐ Clean your lens with a microfiber cloth
  • ☐ Set image format to RAW (or RAW + JPEG)
  • ☐ Check white balance setting or set to Auto White Balance AWB
  • ☐ Set ISO to base (100–200) for daylight
  • ☐ Enable image stabilization (if available) on lens or camera
  • ☐ Check autofocus mode (single vs. continuous)
  • ☐ Use aperture f/5.6–f/11 for maximum lens sharpness (sweet spot)
  • ☐ Avoid wide-open aperture (f/1.8) unless intentional — focus plane is razor thin
  • ☐ Use electronic shutter to eliminate mechanical vibration
  • ☐ Enable lens correction profiles in-camera or in editing

In the Field

  • ☐ Use a tripod or brace yourself for stability. If hand holding be sure to hold your arms close to your body.
  • ☐ Set shutter speed ≥ 1/focal length to avoid blur if handholding (If shooting at 50mm then your shutter speed should be no longer than 1/50 of a second.)
  • ☐ Use single-point autofocus for precision
  • ☐ Half-press shutter to confirm focus lock or use back button focus.
  • ☐ Use exposure delay mode (1–2 sec) to let vibrations settle after pressing shutter (When camera is on tripod.)
  • ☐ Shoot in burst mode for moving subjects
    • Shoot in continuous mode if tracking a moving animal or object.
  • ☐ Check histogram — avoid blown highlights
  • ☐ Use mirror lockup for long exposures if you do not have a mirrorless camera.
  • ☐ Review shots at 100% zoom on screen

Problems & Fixes

  • ☐ Blurry shots → increase shutter speed.
  • ☐ Grainy images → lower ISO, shoot in better light
  • ☐ Overexposed → decrease shutter speed, decrease ISO or stop down your aperture (Go from f/6.4 to f/8, etc.)
  • ☐ Underexposed → raise ISO, open aperture wider (f/9 to f/8, etc.), or increase your shutter speed
  • ☐ Missed focus → switch to single-point AF, slow down
  • ☐ Camera shake → use tripod, remote shutter, or self-timer. Make sure you set the shutter speed to greater than or equal to your focal length.

Pro Tips for Tack-Sharp Photos

Camera Settings

  • ☐ Use exposure delay mode (1–2 sec) to let vibrations settle after pressing shutter
  • ☐ Set AF fine-tune/micro-adjustment for your specific lens
  • ☐ Use live view + magnified focus for critical manual focus shots
  • ☐ Shoot at base ISO (100–200) for maximum detail and minimum noise

Technique & Stability

  • ☐ Tuck elbows into your chest/sides when handholding
  • ☐ Exhale slowly and shoot between breaths
  • ☐ Use a remote shutter release or 2-second self-timer
  • ☐ Brace camera against a wall, tree, or surface when no tripod available
  • ☐ Use a bean bag or sandbag for low-angle stability
  • ☐ Use a tripod
  • ☐ Keep weight centered over tripod legs
  • ☐ Tighten all tripod knobs and ball head before shooting
  • ☐ Hang your camera bag from tripod center column to add weight and reduce vibration
  • ☐ Use back-button focus (BBF) to separate focus from shutter

Focus Mastery

  • ☐ Always focus on the subject's nearest eye (portraits for humans or animals)
  • ☐ Use single-point AF for stationary subjects
  • ☐ Use zone or tracking AF for moving subjects
  • ☐ Recompose AFTER locking focus, not before
  • ☐ In low light, use AF assist beam or focus on high-contrast edges
  • ☐ Manual focus with focus peaking for precise control
  • ☐ Shoot multiple frames and check sharpness at 100% zoom
